The Austrian city of Linz has much to recommend. Here is its very modern Art Museum which stands on the banks of the lovely Danube. Enjoy the day.

The outing

17 Oct 2024 11 22 193
A little walk for these school children here in Linz, Austria today. An exciting time no doubt, no matter the destination. The teachers here keep a watchful eye over their flock and that is reflected in the name of the pharmacy they are about to pass 'der Apotheke Schutzengel'- Guardian Angel. (Thanks to Lothar (below) for pointing that out to me). A striking other thing: the teachers were talking only English to the children! A wonderful way to learn a foreign language from an early age. Enjoy the day.

Pöstlingberg Church interior

HFF ~ Wallfahrtsbasilika Sieben Schmerzen Mariae

A high view for us today as we visit this church. “No visit to Linz should be without a visit to The Pöstlingberg pilgrimage basilica that stands high above the roofs of Linz, on the popular Pöstlingberg. Its twin towers seem to be omnipresent. The Pöstlingberg Church, completed in 1748 with its extraordinary location makes the landmark Pöstlingberg Church a popular wedding church.” www.donauregion.at/en/oesterreich-poi/detail/401745/poestlingberg-church.html See PiPs for alternative views Best full screen Have a good weekend.

Vienna ~ St. Francis of Assisi Church

18 Oct 2024 9 11 183
Shortly after arriving in Austria’s capital, Vienna, we head off from the busy Danube to the city centre. The first thing we see is this marvellous church. We did not have time to explore it but I managed to get a couple of snaps. See PiP St. Francis of Assisi Church, also known as the Emperor's Jubilee Church and the Mexico Church, is a Basilica-style Catholic church. Built between 1898 and 1910, it was consecrated in 1913. Enjoy the day.

Vienna ~ Maria-Theresien-Platz

18 Oct 2024 15 11 214
Maria-Theresien-Platz is a large public square in Vienna, Austria, that joins the Ringstraße with the Museumsquartier, a museum of modern arts located in the former Imperial Stables but here we see the Natural history museum (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien). In here we can see amongst many other things a significant collection of dinosaur skeletons and meteorites in addition to a large display of insects. Enjoy full screen

HWW ~ Pöstlingberg Church from Linz city centre

17 Oct 2024 19 30 196
Seen on our Linz city walkabout. Although the church on the hill was to be our later destination we had a taste of culture here first. The sculpture is actually the Nibelungenschiff by Peter Dimmel. In the context of Richard Wagner's opera cycle, "Der Ring des Nibelungen," it refers to the ship, sometimes depicted as a vessel on the river Rhine, where the magic ring is forged and the story of the Nibelungs unfolds. The Nibelungs are a race of dwarven-like beings in the myth, and the ring, forged by Alberich, is a central object of power and conflict in the cycle Enjoy the day.

HFF ~ Wildaplenbahn

19 Oct 2024 16 31 277
A rather different look at this ride taken inside the Wien (Viennese) Prater Park. The 25-meter (82ft) -high Wildalpenbahn is the largest and longest ride of its kind in the world. In a round boat for up to nine people, you speed down a water channel. This requires nerves of steel and is truly wet family fun. PiP shows original. Best full screen Have a good weekend.

Visions of Maligne Lake, Canada

18 May 2016 20 32 431
After watching one of our 2016 holiday videos the other night I was reminded to search out another Canadian Rockies scene for here. This lake is in Alberta, near Jasper and is 22.5km long covering an area of almost 20sq km at a deepest depth of 100 m. There are several glaciers running into here. We were only here an hour or two as the weather turned cloudy and cool but our memories remain vivid. PiP for another view. Enjoy full screen

All aboard, for the Rocky Mountaineer

20 May 2016 11 17 189
It’s May 2016 and we are taking a two day train journey on one of the world’s most luxurious trains. Traveling from Jasper in Alberta/Canada to the railway town of Kamploops for an overnight stay and then on to Vancouver taking one of the awarded world’s best journeys. This shot is taken on our second day nearing Vancouver following the Fraser River amongst others. The Pip gives us a glimpse of the train just about to leave Jasper. Each carriage was loaded in strict turn order and so the red carpet was transferred to each entrance in turn too. The internal view is of the Silver Leaf carriage whereas the Gold leaf was yet more luxurious. PS. ask yourself, how did I manage to take this? Enjoy full screen.

Ferris wheel heaven

19 Oct 2024 16 14 127
Walking through the famous Prater Park in Vienna can be very exciting indeed for both children and adults. We have in fact just had a ride on the iconic 1897 Wiener Rieserad shown here in the background. See PiP or last photo. The foreground modern wheel is much higher. Enjoy full screen.

HFF ~ Music in the park

19 Oct 2024 25 36 188
Well not really! but we could imagine it from this old Viennese Organ grinder here in the Prater Park of Vienna. Somehow, I imagine that there might well be piped music to the inside of the barrel organ via an inside wired speaker at times . Of course Wiener schrammelmusik or Strauss waltzes (˚◡˚) Have a good weekend.

Rozel Harbour wall

13 Jun 2025 11 12 107
A trip to the Isle of Jersey in the Chanel Islands gives me an opportunity to visit this picturesque little harbour. I found it quite refreshing to still see these beach huts, no doubt housing fishing equipment. Enjoy full screen.

HBM ~ La Corbière and its lighthouse

08 Jun 2025 20 29 191
Jersey, one of the Channel Islands: Sit and enjoy with me this most wonderful sight. The lighthouse of La Corbière is set on a tidal island out at sea, surrounded by dark rock. It is at the extreme south-western point of Jersey in St. Brélade. The name means "a place where crows gather", deriving from the word corbîn meaning crow. You see it here at low tide and accessible via the tidal causeway. Have a great day.

St Brelade’s Bay

08 Jun 2025 13 18 145
A view of the western corner of this big Bay on Jersey with these colourful wind shelters. In the distance we see St Brelades’s parish church with the old Fisherman’s chapel to its left. A unique place that we were to visit shortly after taking this. Enjoy full screen.

An early start

20 Oct 2024 11 18 99
It is only some minutes after sunrise as we soak in the misty atmosphere here on the Danube. We are heading east from Vienna to Budapest via Bratislava. The sky and sun would soon become more pronounced but I did like the feel of this dreamy scene. Notice the flying duck over the water. Enjoy full screen

HWW ~ Buda Castle wall and steps

20 Oct 2024 14 18 142
A look at one of the outride staircases of this impressive castle area of Budapest. Much of the castle was being re-built for a second time after sever damage during the Second World War. To us these impressive building stones look brand new. The step stairway was just one of many belonging to the castle. Enjoy the day

Our dangerous shores

A look at Corbiere on Jersey with its most beautiful coastal outlook, but looks can be deceiving as this memorial monument attest. See PiP. Best full screen
