HFF ~ The Steam Powered clock of St Helier
| |
|
|
|
After having seen a Steam-powered clock in Vancouver, Canada we were pleasantly surprised at seeing one in St Helier, Jersey too. This one is called the Ariadne Steam Clock.
“The Jersey steam clock is a full-scale replica of the centre section of a paddle steamboat named the Ariadne. Although once powered by steam, a Jersey government document states that "the steam workings have been replaced with electrical fittings designed to provide the same functionality including the blowing of ‘steam’ at the appropriate times of the day." Wiki
The Vancouver clock is a hybrid, -powered from the downtown steam heating system and helped by electricity to operate the chain lift system - see escaping steam on that one.
See the full Jersey version in PiP 1 and my Vancouver clock in PiP 2.

The island of Sark – harbour area
| |
|
|
|
It is not very obvious here that we are looking at the Maseline harbour on the Isle of Sark which is one of the Channel Islands.. That is because it is hidden and protected by the concrete harbour wall we can see. Incoming passenger boats and ferries pass by these jagged rocks before entry, guided overhead by the Sark lighthouse. Once disembarked, we go through the shown tunnel before climbing (or riding by tractor trailer) up the steep lane to Sark’s main village.
The lighthouse is actually called 'Point Robert' Lighthouse- Established 1913
The PiP shows part of the inner harbour itself and a closeup of the lighthouse.

HWW ~ The Chainbridge of Budapest

|
|
Here we see the Chain Bridge otherwise known as the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Crossing the Danube from Buda where we are now to Pest, on the other side.
"Designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark and built by Scottish engineer Adam Clark, it was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary. It was opened in 1849. It is anchored on the Pest side of the river to Széchenyi Square, adjacent to the Gresham Palace and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and on the Buda side to Adam Clark Square, near the Zero Kilometre Stone and the lower end of the Castle Hill Funicular, leading to Buda Castle." Have a great day.
La Corbière Lighthouse
| |
|
|
|
This lighthouse, the only lighthouse on the Channel Island of Jersey, poses problems for people like me, Inasmuch that there are just too many great viewpoints of it. I took loads of photographs in the couple of hours of being there but if I had the chance to return in the golden hour, a stormy day or when there is snow or ice then it might take a lifetime to satisfy my photographic instant love for it and its surroundings. Here is a capture that tries to justify why it is here in the first place, being surrounded by vicious rocks that would tear any approaching boat apart in seconds. Its main job however is to steer ships safely to the main harbour of St Helier just a few sea miles away.
La Corbière is significant as the first lighthouse in the British Isles built of concrete, completed in 1874

The Whale Balna, Budapest

Our Danube boat was anchored almost alongside this modern building.
The Famous Cultural Centre and Shopping Mall is on Left Bank of the River Danube River. From a short distance away one could see the shape of a whale on the roof design. On my quick visit it held a display of military equipment.

A rather nice view here over towards Guernsey from the south west coast of Jersey.

The old ‘Sommervale and Thomas’ grain Warehouse in Kings Lynn will have some historic stories to tell, but sadly it is all closed up today. However somebody has made a good attempt at keeping the windows looking cheery.
Yes, I know I could have cropped this in a number of ways. I did in fact nearly put in just the left side four here.
Enjoy the day.
A view over Buttermere

In October 2014 we had a week in the English Lake District. We visited both Buttermere and Crummock Water and I took a lot of photos. We are looking over to Haystacks here from near Buttermere. (Thanks Toz)

A ride on the Budapest Castle Hill Funicular

A trip to Budapest cannot be made without exploring the higher parts of Buda and its castle. To get there one can climb the steps or take this historic funicular.
It was opened in 1870 but destroyed in the second World war but reopened again in 1986. The two bridges were removed in 1900 but rebuilt to the original designs in 1983,
It has a length of 95m to a height of 51m at a gradient of 62 degrees.
