Life on the canal

Life on the canal
It looks a good life - cruising up and down this delightful canal. Other boat owners have decided to rest up here, maybe to take a snack in the nearby garden centre cafe. Taken on the 'Staffordshire & Worcestershire' at Greater Haywood in Staffordshire.

I love canals, this is beautiful.Does someone live in the boats?
Herb Riddle club has replied to Daniela Brocca club
Yes, your country too, is famous for its canals. We do have a lot here. Whether people live in these boats, one could only guess. Some people do live in their narrow boats all year through but mostly it is too cold during the Winter months. My nephew had a narrow boat for some time and in the Winter he said you could feel the cold water through the bottom of the boat. So, some of these boats will indeed be lived in for many months. Most narrow boats in Britain are used simply for holiday and weekend pastimes but many are rented out, so their use is throughout nine months of the year. These boats here, will be in their paid for, semi-permanent mooring awaiting day-trips etc. It cost quite a bit of money just to keep them like this.
Sorry for the info over-load Dani. :) ~ Herb

must be a very relaxing life ...

Herb Riddle club has replied to cp_u club
Yes, it is without doubt relaxing -just going through these waters very slow and then pulling into the side for a long evenings rest by the log fire stove with a glass of wine -but we have many 'Locks' that require strength and a bit of nerve too. They are not so relaxing!

It does look and sound rather wonderful....not sure I could do without my home comforts in the winter though :) A lovely shot Herb. Cheers, Rosa.

We would have to be pretty hard not to want to be on-board one of these in such a place as this -whilst nursing a glass of wine and watching the swans with their signets. And you have to be pretty hardy to live in one of these through our cold and wet Winters too. Nope, -good for holidays mainly! Glad you liked it.

A pretty scenic corner of this part of the World for sure Peter. I don't think I know the Grand Union so would not like to judge.

Hi Herb,

Very nice photo of these canal boats, and lots of interesting dialogue too.
I suppose it would be great if you didn't have to go to work every day...
Personally I would find progress too slow and tedious (especially the locks)

Best Wishes

Thanks Peter -yes, work does get in the way of driving these boats for sure. I think you have to have a special mindset to do a lot in these narrow boats. It can get hectic at times as I experienced once in my Nephews narrow boat -being in charge of Locks. Nice and calm at other times though. Get rid of the job, radio, telly and phone and you can be back in time 100 years! - Great to take photos of though.

I am sure you are right my friend. I have had a couple of week long holidays aboard small river cruisers on the Norfolk Broads and it was wonderful. i think canal cruising is more work though but it still looks good. Very good for the nerves I should imagine.

Thanks George. There was a far bigger collection, in a very large basin just up the canal but I only saw that on GE :)
