Ilam Hall from the River Manifold

Ilam Hall from the River Manifold
Situated in Ilam Park, near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. This is a very pleasant park and a starting point for the impressive Dove Dale walk. The Victorian Gothic Mansion is now owned by our National Trust and part of it is leased to the Youth Hostels Association.

The river here was re-sited and the bridge built anew when the mansion was built, in order to enhance the grounds.

Cämmerer zu Nau, Eve, Holger Hagen, ColRam and 21 other people have particularly liked this photo

You are so kind Cesare. It was as you say a beautiful spot. I guess I was lucky with the light.

How beautiful this is Herb. It looks like a lovely place to visit, and peaceful too. I love that old bridge. Have a good weekend

Thanks Carol. Yes, I am not sure how big the park is. It did not cost anything to wander around it and there was a cafe plus facilities in the impressive hall which by-enlarge was mainly closed to the public.

Dove Dale I know very well but I have never been to Ashbourne, the 'Cathedral of the Peak',
Top shot once more, Herb!

Good to see you Andy. Ashbourne seemed a little way from this tiny village of Iiam but as you say Dove Dale was the real target for us here. A photo or two to come yet! Ashbourne too, was an impressive market town and a perfect venue for our grey miserable day out which allowed us to browse the old shops etc.

Hi Herb,

A nice peaceful scene of old England.

The bridge does look a bit then, but of course wasn't made for anything other than a few horses.
I'm guessing it can't be that old, because it's made of bricks..

Best wishes and a good week ahead

Hi again Peter. Good that you spotted the flaw in all this. In actual fact when the mansion was built the river had flown elsewhere, so the Port family re-routed the river and built the bridge from scratch just so they could have a pleasant vista to it from their gardens. So it was with the age of Gentry in those Victorian days. In that respect no heavy vehicles or carriages would ever had crossed this disguised brick bridge. A nice view now though.

Cheers and have a good week yourself, Herb
ps on closer inspection, I am not sure if bricks are involved in this?

Thanks Toz. Yes we actually managed to park in Iiam village for free, walked around the gardens here, past the pleasant church and then on to the main attraction: Dove Dale of which I shall post a view or two later. A must for you if you have yet to try it all my friend.

Cheers, Herb
