The calming storm

The calming storm
The wild west coast of Ireland is here becalmed by a slow motion capture of time. These poles, I know not if they are an old wreck or groynes, make an attractive centrepiece in these soft waves. This taken at Rossbeigh in County Kerry.

Enjoy large.

The groynes create a fabulous diagonal line! You have chosen a good exposure time, enough to calm the water but not too long to smooth out all detail.

Hi again Gudrun. As you know, it is always a guess, as to what the best length of exposure should be on this kind of scene. Too little and it was a waste of time, too much and it becomes another scene completely. The idea always, is that parts of the scenery are kept sharp. The longer we hold the shutter down, especially with such winds and an unsteady base, the great chance of a fully blurred mess. Glad it worked for you as well as me.

Best wishes, Herb

I like it very much, Herb.
There is a kind of peace in low tide, the ebb tide of the long sand beaches where we know the sea will be the king six hours later.

Herb, this is beautiful. The weathered poles look like an odd sort of standing stones...

Thanks a lot Diana. A very fortunate spot for me as it was just 50 metres from our rented house here. I took many photos of these poles, some in wonderful sunsets and still to be posted here. I had heard from somewhere that this was the remains from an old pier but I cannot see that! Good that you enjoyed it.

Loving so much the diagonal line of poles which, after bravely withstanding a storm,at last can enjoy ,in softer tides, this impressive atmosphere !

Superb shot Herb!

Thanks for this Bea. It is perhaps nice to see these stormy seas softened like this. The poles were a gift for me and that is demonstrated in my huge collection of photos of them. All in all, as you say, this ended up being an atmospheric capture.

I love the minimalism here Herb. Your exposure for the sea is pretty much perfect for my tastes and I completely agree with Gudrun's comment (above). The diffused light is quite lovely and I love the posts standing like silent sentinels before the storm.

PS: In my opinion, they're probably the remains of a small jetty or pier. Groynes tend to run from the beach out into the sea and not horizontal to the beach and the uprights look too straight to be the ribs of a wrecked boat, which would normally be curved. Of course, I could be writing complete rubbish :-))

Good to see you again Keith. Yes, I like a bit of minimalism now and again. Good that you enjoyed all the elements here. I am fairly sure now after reading your words that you must be right and these poles were once part of pier for all the reasons you explain, so no rubbish written my friend.

Cheers -see you again tomorrow :) Herb

HaHa, maybe you are right Toz. I had not thought of that one. As said above, these were almost literally on our doorstep and I saw these poles in a lot of different lighting conditions. So, more to come. (Well at least one more -maybe :) )
Like I said to Keith -see you tomorrow :)
