Its Crocus day!

Its Crocus day!
Happy crocus day -well it may not be officially, but it is for me. A couple of hours of February warm sun in our garden brings out these early Spring flowers. A moment of joy in our household and maybe to you here too.
Enjoy.
Crocus is a genus of flowering plants in the iris family comprising 90 species of perennials growing from corms. Many are cultivated for their flowers appearing in autumn, winter, or spring. The spice saffron is obtained from the stigmas of Crocus sativus, an autumn-blooming species. Wikipedia

A lovely collection Herb I've not got many purple ones, sadly there are not the sparrows to destroy them now used to put cotton over them to keep the little perishers off. It's Crocus day at Leicester Botanic Garden on Sunday

Herb Riddle club has replied to Peter Castell club
Hi Peter, I did not know that sparrows destroyed these. We have lots of house and tree sparrows in our garden but they tend to keep away from these. Happen different species of crocus? Nice to know that I have started something off -they must have seen this shot too :~)

I still did not see any. Where I live now i'm in the middle of houses and there are no gardens. I will have to go to the market.

Daniela, I always think it is such a shame when people cannot enjoy such colours and smells in their own gardens but I also know how the World is. I think that you are quite near to the mountains but without a car or easy public transport that is not always easy to get to too. In that case a market of public park is the next best thing. Other flowers are starting to bloom in our garden today in the 17C high temperature with sun. -Just returned from yet another walk around my favourite Dovestones reservoir with my wife Eileen, where some TV filming was taking place.

I'm lazy, that is. Because I'm not living in a great town as it was before when I was in Milan. Domodossola is about 20.000. And we have mountains and a lot of green near the town. It's me, I prefer to sit on front of the pc :-)

How beautiful!! I just love this colorful collage of crocus goodness! They are all just beautiful and how lucky for you that you have so many beautiful flowers growing in your garden!

When Steve and I moved up to our property there were some creamy crocuses that popped up every year...until about two years ago. A mole or ground squirrel found the bulbs...*cry*...now we have none. Tried to plant more...EATEN. *sigh* But at least I can enjoy your lovely display! :)

Herb Riddle club has replied to Janet Brien club
Thanks Janet. I think you are the first to put a link from one of my pictures to another. (besides me of course :)) Yes, i see out of my windows this morning that the crocus blues are still there. Very happy indeed that you enjoyed this collection of mine. Sad about your bulbs being eaten. We also had a lot of problems like that, especially with our daffodil bulbs when our resident squirrels dug them up and took a few bites from them. At the moment we don't have as many of the little beast (angels?) as we no longer feed the birds with peanuts and have a squirrel baffle to stop them climbing the feeder anyway. But -they then took a change of diet, to eating the dropped sunflower hearts that we feed our multitude of birds with -hmmm -but at least they don't bury those seeds which are never on the ground long as we have many resident blackbirds and some dove/pigeons that patrol the ground around the feeder as other birds are eating and dropping seeds. Maybe a new collection of some of our other flowers one day too?

Best Wishes Herb

Ich habe Schneeglöckchen leider wenig Krokusse - im Pillnitzer Schlosspark gibt es eine solche Fläche mit Krokussen - bei mir blüht seit November der Duftschneeball er blüht bis Ende März -

Hello Elbetinum. Good to see you here. Yes, it is always good to see such blooming flowers, especially in your own garden. Otherwise in a park is OK too. I am not sure of what a 'Duftschneeball' is for a plant.

Der botanische Name ist :Viburnum fragans - es ist ein Strauch etwa 3 m hoch - die Blüten duften wie Vanille - er blüht von November bis April - nach dem Frost blüht er von neuem -

Good to see you again Albert. These have been in our garden some years now and are still just tiny flowers. However their numbers are growing each year. Thanks for the extra information here. The smell of them are as you describe: vanilla.

Best Wishes, Herbert
