The Spiral Tunnels of Big Hill, BC, Canada

The Spiral Tunnels of Big Hill, BC, Canada
Inspired to post this after seeing this: www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/46854248. Taken on my trip to the Canadian Rockies in 2016. This section of the railway consist of a series of tunnels blasted in the side of the mountains that create a gradual spiral accent or decent. See here that the same train is just entering the bottom tunnel and coming out on its way right from the top tunnel and this is just one spiral tunnel of many on the same 10 mile hill stretch.

See PiPs.

Thanks Keith. It was amazing to behold this. The train, almost a mile long could be seen well below us and then high up the hill. Could you imagine someone making these in Wales or our Lake District. As you say an engineering marvel.

Thanks Nick. Without the running train here it would have nothing much but the train demonstrates the principles and the reason behind all this. Glad you liked it.

Hi Herb,

Well, that is a very impressive tunnel! I like the way you waited for a train to be visible, and showed both ends of it. Certainly puts the tunnel into perspective. You must have had a great journey to be there!
Best Wishes

Great that you managed to get here Peter. As said on your own photo that inspired the posting of this, this one was quite impressive. Unfortunately I am sure that this was not the best view of the system but maybe the only one. When we got there the train had not arrived but our guide had us wait until this did. It was chugging along here for what seemed like hours. It was a perfect trip, but much too short as we had scheduled an Alaska cruise too. Glad you liked this. Hope you got to inspect the PiPs too.

Cheers Rosa. Was some countryside, was some train! Most interesting bit of railway line that I have ever seen, I think.

We had a coffee break there and saw the train go into the tunnel and get out again, but not all the cars were in the tunnel yet. That was funny.
Have a nice weekend

Must be quite a view a view from the cab of the leading loco - watching the tail end of your train going in the opposite direction!

I suspect so my friend. Coincidentally I recently saw a 'Quest' TV doc about trains in Alaska and saw a similar length train in a loop where the driver could see the tail end too. Thanks for the visit

Amazing shot and good notes and also enjoyed all the comments!
An advantage of missing a few weeks photos due to pressure of work and then coming to them late! (Well that's my excuse anyway!).

Aye Andy and to prove the point here I am answering your comment three months late! I now get Ipernity news daily but the odd new comment to older photos still get missed. Very happy that you like the photos and stories alongside.

I am a little bit proud about the spiral tunnels because the engineers inspired themself by the Gotthard mountain track in Switzerland...

Welcome Andrea to my gallery here. Very happy that you liked this series on the Canadian Spiral tunnels -they were indeed an eye-opener. As it happens I travelled through the famous Gothard tunnel in 2013 and was surprised how hot it was when we got in the centre during the late Summer. We was on our way to Lake Como from Lucern.
Andrea great to have a contact from Switzerland, I look forward to seeing more of your work too.

Greetings from the UK, Herb
