Wray Castle

Wray Castle
This splendid castle is actually a Victorian neo-gothic building, built in 1840 for a retired Liverpudlian surgeon, James Dawson. This was purchased for the National Trust in 1926 and was made famous by the fact that Beatrix Potter spent a summer holiday there when she was 16 in 1882. Set in beautiful grounds on the high shores of Lake Windermere.

It had a profound effect on her and ended up to the great benefit of all the Lake District as she purchased much land and buildings before donating it all to the National Trust.

One of the better LDistrict secrets perhaps. As it is not a real ancient castle it plays little part in our histories and until recently sat quite forlorn. It is now kitted out mainly as a museum and teaching building for children who can act out medieval scenes with the provided costumes and props. A new link proved for you now.

A very sturdy looking structure, he must have been an expensive doctor to be able to afford having that built

He had quite a bit of money though his rich wife, he also built a nearby church. So not his own medical payments. Glad you like this.

It did indeed look impressive. Like in your country too we have quite a lot of these 'Follies'. It was just a Victorian mansion built to impress! Of which it did!

Belle architecture pour un château qui ne ressemble pas tout a fait aux autres châteaux anglais.certainement pour une cause..La prise de vue est admirable et surtout très remarquable.
Bonne soiree.

Very happy that you like this one Malik. As it was not ever a 'real castle' but a Victorian mansion it works very well here. It has recently been renovated.

Most impressive! You can tell it's Victorian, everything's just a bit much;-) This place must be impossible to heat in winter.

Hi Gudrun, we never went inside as I believe it is really just a shell now. We passed here last year too when it was surrounded by scaffolding being renovated. I must admit that it looked very impressive, especially close up. Got to agree with you re the heating.

Very impressive indeed. Obviously surgery was one of the better paying jobs even back in Victorian times.

Always difficult in the short time we are at these places to know if there is a better place to shoot from Jeff. In the circumstances, this looks good to me too.

Thanks for this one Peter. You will be using similar glass and camera technology now too. Coupled with your photographic eye, I always expect great things from you too.
