Stone book carvings in Krakow house wall.

Stone book carvings in Krakow house wall.
I like this. It sends out a message that literacy within books is timeless. Seen carved into an outer house wall in the medieval town centre of Krakow, Poland.

The titles shown here depict famous writers of the world as well as some famous books from this area.

I tried to find more information on this, but could not. Maybe a viewer might help.

Andy Rodker, , Rosalyn Hilborne, Annemarie and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thanks Susanne, especially for reminding me that this was a motif. I managed to find just one other picture of this on the whole internet but no explanation as to what, who or why it was carved.

Hi Herb,

a fascinating detail from your holiday, and a shame nobody else has any information. Were the book titles real, or just random letters? Maybe in Latin of course...!!

Best Wishes

H again Peter. I still have found no further info but because I have the original sized photo I can read the titles clearly: Sofokles: Sophocles -Greek- famous for his tragedies , Dumas: French author, Mann: Thomas Mann-German writer. Mistrzimałgorzata, Krabat and other shown here are famous books of this area. So the picture depicts historical authors and book titles -not much in Latin as far as I can see. Hope this helps.

I agree with Rosa, and it's a pity and a surprise that there doesn't seem to be anything about it anywhere!
