The Sunday Challenge. 8th January 2017

The Sunday Challenge. 8th January 2017
Pictures at an exhibition.

2016 saw the demise of many popular and revered musicians, and as 2 of our favourite challenges are 'illustrating songs' and make an LP cover, we will revisit these challenges but pick a song or a piece of music from one of the people who passed on this year. Keith Emerson, the co-founder and keyboardist of progressive rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer, has died aged 71.

One of my favourites, but couldn't really get a reasonable photo to go with it.

These pathetic attempts were all done in 1995. I had broken my leg in January and damaged the soft tissue of my foot - was in plaster for 11 weeks. It was a snowy /icy winter and I couldn't get out. Trying my hand at art, and failing I'm afraid, kept me occupied.

Amelia, there is no failure here that's for sure. :)

They've all been put away again in a cupboard, Chris, apart from the framed one which hangs in a rarely used spare bedroom. ;-)

I may not know art, but I know what I like and I like these.

You are very kind, Doug. When my leg mended I vowed never to pick up a paint brush again! ;-)

If / when no new photo sites are open to me I might reconsider buying some more brushes and paints, Chris. I have plenty of paper. ;-)

Thank you, Harriet. I haven't looked at this 'artwork' for over 20 years. In fact I'd forgotten about it until today. TSC had me thinking. ;-)

I agree with fraggle- if these are supposed to be failures what are your successes like!

I also thought of doing Pictures at an exhibition but didn't get round to going to an art gallery and having no pictures of my own...

I wish I'd though to go down the classical route as you did for your Not TSC, Gudrun. It took me ages to look at various you tube videos etc, most of which didn't appeal to me at all, and the few that did - well- I couldn't think of how to illustrate them. This turned out to be almost the last gasp! ;-)

I know how you felt- I did the same...I wanted to use Clair de Lune but there was no moon to take a photo of;-)

holy smokes Amelia, that art work is fabulous! I would hang each and every one on my wall for all to see! You picked a great song to illustrate it too!

I haven't heard that expression (Holy smokes) for years, Wendi. It made me smile broadly on this dreary Monday morning. I suppose I could hang them on the back of little used bathroom door. I picked the music only because I had something that would fit to it. ;-)

Amelia, I had not heard this song before and I must thank you for sharing it along with your artist talent. :) Your statements makes me remember that they say we are own worst critics. :)

I think the absolutely best versions are those played by big symphony orchestras like Chicago Symphony Orchestra: youtu.be/DXy50exHjes

Second best is the electronic music composition by Isao Tomita: oncewasanote.com/2012/11/18/nov-18-2012-modesto-mussorgsky-pictures-at-an-exhibition-isao-tomita

I personally like also the version played by ELP =)

And here is my modest attempt to illustrate Mussorgsky's famous work: www.ipernity.com/doc/serola/40520202

Very good art and works well as an illustration for that music composition. There are few interesting versions on that Mussorgsky's composition, and my favorite is made by Isao Tomita. But ELP comes right after that.

Check out the link i left for Chris (Clickety click) Sami. I think ELP a become very self indulgent after the first couple of minutes, and ruin a good piece of music. But then - I'm getting old. ;-)

Nice work Amelia. Excellent idea for the challenge. I especially like the daffodils and the framed snowdrops - they remind me of Victorian flower illustrations.
Amelia club has replied to Graham Chance club
Many thanks, Graham. I too quite like the daffodils. They are the wild daffodil, Narcissus pseudonarcissus, and are so much more delicate than those of the brash verge plantings favoured by local councils. Snowdrops are one of my favourite flowers, and they are already poking their grey noses through the soil in our garden.

Now this Victorian 'artist' has some housework to do. Goodness knows where my maidservants have got to. :-)))

i do need new pencils, paints and brushes though. There's an art session in our village once a month - next Monday could be the start of something new.
