  • The bus doesn't stop here anymore

The photo of the exterior of a store at Cymric, Saskatchewan in the Buildings album says a lot about my province. Cymric is a Welsh word that refers to both the Welsh language and the culture. It reminds me that place names here are derived from so many different sources, from the Indigenous peoples who lived here for thousands of years before European contact, to the people (mostly from the United Kingdon and Europe) who settled here in the 19th and 20th centuries. Place names helped keep alive…

  • After the Lunch

    Waterloo Bridge
[A poem by Wendy Cope (born 1945)] On Waterloo Bridge, where we said our goodbyes, The weather conditions bring tears to my eyes. I wipe them away with a black woolly glove And try not to notice I've fallen in love. On Waterloo Bridge I am trying to think: This is nothing. You're high on the charm and the drink. But the juke-box inside me is playing a song That says something different. And when was it wrong? On Waterloo Bridge with the wind in my hair I am tempted to ski…

  • Steps to make your life more creative

    The Silver Trail
Much has been said about how creativity works, its secrets, its origins, and what we can do to optimize ourselves for it. In this excerpt from his fantastic 1991 lecture, John Cleese offers a recipe for creativity, delivered with his signature blend of cultural insight and comedic genius. Specifically, Cleese outlines “the 5 factors that you can arrange to make your lives more creative”: 1. Space (“You can’t become playful, and therefore creative, if you’re under your usual pressures.”) 2. Time (“It’s not enough to create space; you have to create your space for a specific period of time.”) 3. Time (“Giving your mind as long as possible to come up with something original,” and learning to tolerate the discomfort of pondering time and indecision.) 4. Confidence (“Nothing will stop you being creative so effectively as the fear of making a mistake.”) 5. Humor (“The main evolutionary significance of humor is that it gets us from the closed mode to the open mode quicker than anything else.”)

  • The art of reduction

    Red alert
To my opinion a lot of photographs get better with diminished detail, call it abstraction if you like. The art of reduction is very interesting. Try for yourself: look for images that you like where reduction or abstraction is an essential part of the image. And then imagine how they would have looked without it. No distraction, no irrelevant details, no deviation, straight ahead. The only problem is the fact that the art of reduction has a steep learning curve ........... You c…

  • Pylon

    It Lives!
Pylon the breeze carries traffic sounds across a tractor- scarred farmland... pylons above the bypass reiterate the vantage point of a buzzard...houses with grey blue slates ... nearly rhythmical murmur of the pines and far-heard traffic ... that’s how it always starts ... the engine of the reservoir, the soft light starts the red brick mantles of estates... the woman has her left arm raised to shoulder level and bent at the elbow ... that gesture... this, together with the smile that i…

Dear members and friends of ipernity, 1. Bulletin from our club president. On 7 October 2023 we were presented with a claim for monetary damages from a well-established and reputable German-headquartered company that specializes in obtaining compensation from intellectual property theft (e.g. copyright infringements) because of the actions of an ipernity member. He is now a past member because his account was promptly deleted along with the image that had been uploaded without the photog…

Am 23. 09. 2023 eröffnete das Museum Schloss Oberhausen eine umfangreiche Ausstellung über Michel Ende. • Ethel - the Car I Always Wanted

“Never meet your heroes” is what they say. As a young man I had two – the Jaguar E-type (naturally) and the 7-litre, Frua-bodied AC428. Of the latter, only 79 were ever made and, unlike the E-type, the 428 was and remains little-known. Every year I went to the Motor Show at Earl’s Court to worship both of them, and arriving at their respective stands I would almost fall to my knees. I fantasised about speeding along The Hog’s Back in one or the other in a state of euphoria, but never in real…

Dear members and friends of ipernity, 1. Outreach support needed (advisory position). For our club to have a good future, it needs to be better known. Therefore, we need to promote ipernity. There are many ways to do this. Some of them have already been put in place. But we need someone who has a little time to keep these activities alive. New ways of promoting ipernity could also be found. Advisors would coordinate with the team, but have autonomy to run their own projects. There is…
