Very sad Amelia. He was killed on my birthday :-( My grandfather was almost killed in WWI when a bullet skimmed his head. He was in hospital for a while and survived the war. Lovely old picture. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes, Rosa.

I cannot imagine what it must be like for the mothers and fathers of those killed in action in two world wars and in all the wars since, Rosa. It must be heartbreaking. So many lives taken or changed, and no lessons learned it seems.
Best wishes, Amelia

It seems a lesson never learned Amelia, but with the awful atrocities committed to this day, is there another answer?! My uncle was killed in WW2 at the age of 23 and body never found. My gran would not believe it and never gave up hope that he would return home. Very sad indeed. All the best, Rosa.

A very poignant photo Amelia. My grandfather was killed in WW1, he was a submariner, the North sea his grave. My uncle died on a destroyer, in WW2 his grave the English Channel. Both in their early twenties. Just so sad. Best wishes. John.

thank you, John. I hesitated to post it, but it seemed right for this weekend. My father was too young for WW1 and too old for WW2.

There are many photos of lost loved ones in families, Steve, and it still continues today. I don't think we'll ever have peace in our time.
Cheers, amelia

How sad, Amelia. My family had luck with the times, my grandfather , born 1902 , was too young for WW1 and too old for WW2 and my father, born 1927 August just became 18 after the end of the war. A good thing to have these photos. Hugs,Dany

My father was one year older than your grandfather, Dany, and so avoided being called up during the second World War, but I know he volunteered. I have lots of old family photos, but there are not many of me. No-one seemed to have a camera during the war and in the aftermath.
Hugs, Amelia

Amelia , thank you because you share with us what happened in your family. I think every family has given sacrifices in the two wars, the great-grandfather in World War I, and his son my grandfather in World War II. My grandmother and great grandmother were both young widowed .
