Juvenile Arctic fox....in the wild

Juvenile Arctic fox....in the wild
No crop. On uninhabited Medney Island in the Bering Sea. It was very unafraid, curious and playful. It came and nibbled my boot and my trousers as I sat very still on the beach.

J. Gafarot, Diane Putnam, , and 37 other people have particularly liked this photo

Well captured, Diana. Isn't it great to be in places where animals have no fear of humans. :)

Perfect, Di. Such striking eyes. When do they turn white then?...it'd be a bit of a bummer trying to hunt in the snow being this colour...

How adorable! My dad told of how, when working in the Aleutian Islands, foxes would run up the stairs and into the small planes after they landed. They knew food was in there. They were so friendly that it was hard to get them off the planes!

Diana Australis club has replied to Diane Putnam club
When was that, Diane? They are exactly the same here....these islands are the Westernmost point of the Aleutians chain. Bering and the early explorers record of being pestered by them and having bags and belongings snitched....

He was on the Alaskan end, Adak, Atka and two others I don't remember. Late '70s. He was building military communication towers. I was reading about the extinct Falklands wolf awhile back, which was first recorded by Darwin, of all people. He noted that they were as friendly as domestic dogs and greeted the men with wagging tails. Easy to see how they could have been domesticated. Actually, they were hunted to extinction by American fur traders because they were so easy to kill. : (

Diana Australis club has replied to Diane Putnam club
I believe so! And we saw a lot of military communication towers...first in Nome, then in Anadyr in Chukotka, and on the Russian Aleutin islands. The fixes were so very, very cute. They see people on this island about twice a year, as it is uninhabited!
