The shipping container sized blocks of harvested cotton are named modules These get processed in a gin to get rid of any rubbish eg bits of leaf and twigs, and to separate the fibre from the seed. The fibre, named lint, is compressed into bales, around 30 from a module. The seed can be used for stock feed and extraction of oil. The lint is graded for colour and length and priced for whiteness and greater length. The cotton in the photo would have fallen from modules being taken from the field to the gin.

Thanks very much for that detailed information, Graham. It clarifies well the stages of handling and processing that the cotton goes through after harvesting.
