Nearing Mannahill

Nearing Mannahill
The Barrier Highway, linking Broken Hill to the coast, largely follows the railway line. Far out in nowhere is the tiny rail settlement of Mannahill - a welcome stopping point in the vastness. View on black.

The curve in the road and the flat land make for a very well done panorama view.

o0o you can almost see for miles and miles and if the railway line
runs along side it makes me think ... why not catch the train ;-) oOo

The only passenger trains are the "Indian Pacific", a tourist train once or twice weekly from Sydney to Perth: this line was built to carry minerals to the coast and that remains essentially the sole purpose, Bev.

Beautiful empty open road though must be tedious on a long journey.

Many thanks, Monica. Lots of caffeine helps - coffee or Coke. :)

You convey the sheer expanse in this scene, onwards and onwards seemingly forever.

The settlement must be a welcome place! What do the people do there for work etc? Do they feel isolated or just glad to be "away from it all"..??

tiabunna has replied to Joan+
Thanks, Joan. It started off as a railway stop (I guess when the engines were steam and needed to add coal and water). Still some railway work, plus a petrol station/store, beyond that there are some (very large) grazing properties.

We stopped at Mannahill for a most welcome iced coffee a few weeks ago....keeps the concentration up on the long, straight roads!

tiabunna has replied to Diana Australis
Yes, we needed a caffeine break there too - hence this shot (and several others). :)
