Market Cross ~ Nunney

Market Cross ~ Nunney
Just past the George Inn, by the river, you will find the old Market Cross with this inscription:

Formerley stood in the churchyard, it was taken down in 1869 & disposed of in pieces. Some years later, parts of the cross were found in a builder's yard & were acquired by Mr.J.H.Shore of Whatley, for the sum of £2. The cross was restored by Mr.J.Foster, an architect, and stood for many years in Mr Shore's grounds. In June 1959 the village fair for which there was a Royal Charter granted in 1259, was revived and with monies raised by the Fair, the cross was returned to the village.

I find it very good that the village was able to recover its cross!

In addition it is particularly majestic at the edge of this stream !!!!

A beautiful stone Celtic cross..............I'm guessing it would have originally marked someone's grave. I particularly like the circular stone plinth. It looks lovely beside the river.

An interesting plaque with the history of the cross.

I like the second PiP too.............the pub signs location is very unusual, but very visible..!!

A lovely series Rosa.

Thank you for your kind comments Keith. It is good to have the Market Cross back where it belongs. The pub sign has been like that for as long as I can remember....since the 60's at least. I don't think I have ever seen one like it anywhere else.

Take care and have a good new week Keith.

It's amazing that some of the stones didn't get incorporated into someones garden wall !! I assume that small villages couldn't afford a covered market cross and the steps were used to display produce for sale. There is a pub sign across the road in in Stamford Rutland I haven't got a photo but it's easy to find on the internet. I notice the local council are still using weedkiller on the gutters etc not like many places where the weeds are thriving, the next thing will be blocked drain and broken tarmac. I hope you have a nice Monday Rosalyn

That is a wonder actually Peter! I have been to Stamford. I'll have a look later for the sign.
A beautiful sunny Monday here, so I'm hoping the same for your Peter.

Buen lunes, Rosa

It is Celtic Cross Jose Manuel, and yes, it has quite a history. I know of Norman Foster and have just looked at the metro entrance you mention. It is very nice and unusual.
Thank you for your kind comments and interesting information.

Sweet picture and even better writting :
Raised by the monies . . .
I do believe that today no one would have that kind of courage, ie, to say from where the money comes by and show how it was used for...
