Hardy Monument ~ HFF

Hardy Monument ~ HFF
The other Thomas Hardy from Dorset ~ The Hardy Monument is 72-foot-high (22 m) on the summit of Black Down in Dorset, erected in 1844 by public subscription in memory of Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar. The site for the monument was chosen because the Hardy family wanted a monument which could be used as a landmark for shipping. The monument has been shown on navigational charts since 1846 and is visible from a distance of 60 miles (97 km). The monument was designed to look like a spyglass, as Admiral Hardy would have used on board ship. Its eight corners are aligned with the compass points. Viewed from the ground the corner to the right of the lightning conductor points due south. The bench mark on the northwest face denotes the altitude of Black Down at 780 feet (240 m).

I was just about to say, Rosa, I enjoyed his novel, The Mayor of Casterbridge, then I noticed it was a different Thomas Hardy. LOL. It's a beautiful monument, but I can't help feeling it looks a bit like a factory chimney. LOL. Cheers, Joe

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Joe, Son of the Rock club
Ha ha! My daughter and I felt like we were in "The Woodlanders" in the village we visited before passing this monument. I agree, it does look like a factory chimney, but we have lost so many of them! Take care and have a good weekend. Cheers, Rosa.

A great subject and very interesting notes Rosa. The view towards the sea over the beautiful landscape clearly demonstrates the wisdom of building the tower in this location. The PiP is a wonderful composition in its own right.

A really unusual and rather impressive looking monument, Rosalyn. From your pip it seems to command an amazing view all the way to the see. Thanks for the curious, intriguing history of this landmark.
I am still partial to the other Thomas Hardy (been re-reading Tess of the D'Ubervilles ...)

Tess of the D'Urbervilles is one of the saddest stories. He wrote very true to life in those hard times. I am a great fan of his writing and love to visit the places he wrote about :-)

Have you ever visited the Nelson Monument up on Portsdown Hill in Portsmouth, if not you should add it to your list. www.ipernity.com/doc/keithburton/24788007

Enjoy the rest of your day.........and have a super weekend.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thank you very much Keith. No I haven't visited Nelson's Monument, but after following your link, I would very much like to. The problem usually is that we come to Portsmouth to visit my auntie and the family, and run out of time for sightseeing and end up at Southsea with fish and chips! I would like to make a specific journey to do just that though.

Have a good and sunny weekend Keith.

Of course I thought of Thomas Hardly the novelist and was so surprised to see such a high impressive tower - like monument dedicated to him! But then I read your very interesting notes and I realised there are two T. H.! I didn’t know that so I must thank you twice: for the beautiful picture ( what a view from there!) and for your precious information!:-)

Hi Rosa
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
Wonderful information too!
Although you would need a good telescope, and be a lot higher than a ships crows nest, to see this at 60 miles due to the curvature of the earth!
Great colours though!
Best Wishes, HFF, a nice sunny weekend, and stay safe!!

Supongo que la empalizada parece más pequeña por el tamaño del monumento, que recuerda también a un faro que pudiera verse desde la mar. Paisaje espectacular por hermoso. Pasad un buen fin de semana.
