Tytherington Church of St James.

Tytherington Church of St James.
Just a few miles from Sutton Veny is Tytherington, where this old church stands. Possibly the oldest church in Wiltshire, this simple building dates to at least the early 12th century. The church was founded by Empress Matilda (Queen Maud), mother of Henry II, who had a residence at nearby Heytesbury.

Thank you for your kind comments Joe. It is on a high bank in the village and quite takes your breath away as you approach it....even though I knew it was there :-)

A very nice capture of this wonderful basic church, a pity you were not able view the interior, many of the older churches were founded or funded by local landowners. I hope you have had a nice if warm day Rosalyn

Thank you Peter. The church was open but I visited the two in Sutton Veny and felt a bit churched out ;-)) Last year I read a book all about Empress Matilda, which was so interesting.
Too warm for me today Peter...how about you!?

I love this building. It is small and plain and simple and seems in keeping with Christian teaching. And it is so old and has survived so much. I appreciate the beautiful grand ornate churches full of wonderful artifacts built to celebrate the glory of God but this is closer to the heart of religion I feel. Must be Scottish Presbyterianism coming out in me.

I couldn't agree more Jean. Hardly any tourists get to see it, in this out of the way village in the middle of the Wiltshire Downs.

An impressively old church, way before this 'modern' Gothic styling came along! Beautifully taken too, Rosa.

Yes, way before Gothic styling George. I like that it is in the middle of the Wiltshire Downs and such a quiet location. Thank you for your kind comments.

An unassuming yet beautiful little church.................and in my humble opinion, this is how local churches should be. Jean has explained it much better than I could.

I'm not a religious person, but I do enjoy visiting these little churches and even sitting inside for a while.

Excellent images Rosa..............the main image is particularly well composed..!!

As you come down the road, this church sits high on a bank on a T junction and the first time you see it, comes as a complete surprise. I am not religious either Keith, but I love the history of these places, and looking inside, although I didn't in this particular church.

Many thanks for your kind comments, and pleased you have had such a lovely week with your family. My youngest and family are on holiday in Devon and having a great time. They had to cancel their trip to Ibiza, but the weather is similar :)

Hi Rosa

A very nice picture, of this very old church. Great information too, which I read with interest.
Very tactfully, it didn't mention the name of the person who ordered it to be stripped /robbed of anything of value, the proceeds going into the king's treasury.
such a shame!
Best Wishes,
Peter

Hi Peter,
Thank you very much for your interest and kind comments.
I think you would have been safe in mentioned the person's name now...but certainly not back then!!

Best wishes,
Rosa.

I love the simplicity of this Church. The fact that it has survived all those years testament to the builders and those who have looked after it down through the ages; despite the the attentions of less charitable characters!

When you come around the corner in the village and see this little church high on the bank, on a T junction, it looks so beautiful. I don't travel along this out of the way route very often, but love the villages along it.
Thank you so much for your kind comments.

Best wishes, Rosa.
