Norton-sub-Hamdon Church

Norton-sub-Hamdon Church
The Church of St Mary the Virgin has 13th-century origins but was rebuilt around 1510. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building. Restoration was undertaken in 1894 and again in 1904. The five-stage tower, dates from around 1485, and is 98.5 feet (30 m) high. It was damaged by lightning and fire on 29 July 1894, but restored within a year preserving the original design. The dovecote in the churchyard dates from the 17th century, and was associated with a manor house which was demolished around 1850.

Wonderful images Rosa. The church is quite majestic with that lovely tower - and looks fantastic in the sunshine. The dovecote images are fascinating. I especially like the 2nd one with the gravestones in the foreground. It seems very substantial for a dovecote, which I find unusual, it's solidly built with huge buttresses on the sides! I wonder if it was originally used for something else?

I had hoped to get out with the camera today, but it's hardly stopped raining for the last two days, and it doesn't look to be getting any better soon! I hope you're faring better :-)

Thank you very much Keith. A good job I went out that day, as we haven't had much sunshine since! I haven't found out much about the dovecote other than it is thought to have been part of a medieval complex attached to The Priory, in nearby Stoke-sub-Hamdon.

No trips with the camera here either Keith. Let's hope for better weather next week!

A fine main image Rosa. The road leads the eye to the impressive tower of the church which itself looks wonderful with the sunlight highlighting the honey colour of the stonework. The dovecote is an impressive structure (lucky doves) and looks right at home among the headstones of the departed.

Thank you for your kind comments Doug. We were very lucky to have such good weather on that day. The sun on the mellow stone makes all the difference.

All the best, Rosa.

A nice view of the complete church and the dovecote, can you go in the dovecote? they would have been a bit grim when full of birds. I hope you are having a good weekend Rosalyn, quite nice today after yesterdays rain

I didn't try the door Peter. I didn't see any birds around it either. I think you must have had a better day yesterday than us. I was hoping to go out this afternoon, if the rain stops. Hope you are having a good Sunday too.

Lovely looking church Rosalyn, Dovecote is a new term for me but I see it is really a posh Avery.
Excellent photography on the Church and two PIPS, Clear bright and crisp helped by good light.

Unusual to see one so close to the church Maurice. It is thought that it may have been part of the large priory that was in the nearby village of Stoke-sub-Hamdon. I find good weather makes photography so much easier :)

A beautifully composed shot of the church. The tower is very impressive as are its upper windows. An exceptionally grand dovecote. It's lovely, especially the ornamented top.

Thank you very much Jean. The tower is very imposing as you walk down the lane. There was a little Victorian school house to the right of it, but for some reason I didn't get a picture!

It is unusual to see them in a church yard, but I just remembered another in North Cadbury. I think I put some pic's om Panoramio...but that was a long time ago now!

A very well done set of photos! The tower is unusually high, the mellow stone looks beautiful in the sunlight. I like the idea of having a dovecote in the cemetery.

A lovely set of images, Rosa. I'm not familiar with dovecotes, so looked it up - then found myself wondering what it's doing in the grounds of the church.

It took me a while to find anything about this particular dovecote George, and it seems it may have been part of a medieval complex attached to The Priory, in nearby Stoke-sub-Hamdon.
Thank you for your kind comments. I hope your wife is recovering well. My best wishes for a good week ahead to you both.

Not too sure, but I think that these square bell towers are very typical of England ... and those VERY OLD cemeteries too .... Can you still read some names or dates on the graves ?
Beautiful and very interesting photographs, Rosalyn.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Christiane ♥.•*¨`*•✿
Yes they are quite typical Christiane. Sometimes a small village has a large church and you wonder why, but looking at the history, this one was part of a large priory in medieval times.
I couldn't read the very oldest gravestones unfortunately.
Thank you for your kind compliment.

These old grave stones can surely tell stories....you know, I love what your country shows to me :)
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Tanja - Loughcrew club
That is a very nice thing to say Tanja, thank you. Some of the stones are badly worn, but the ones that we were able to read certainly told a story of those times, namely Victorian and a little earlier. We are so lucky in this day and age, even though we take so much for granted.
