Big old trees!

Big old trees!
This is a sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) which can be found in the park of Stourhead in Stourton, Wiltshire. The girth measures around 6 m. Its height is around 15 m. This tree was planted in 1500, which makes it 519 years old. I don't know the gentleman in the picture but thought it would give good scale to have him there :-)

, Gudrun, Eve, Ludmila Litvin and 44 other people have particularly liked this photo

I love the shape of these trees, but the one in the foreground is just brilliant............and over 500 years old too...........how wonderful.

Beautifully composed in lovely light and colour Rosa. A great idea to keep the person in shot for scale. This definitely deserves to be viewed large...........the detail and textures in the trees is excellent!

They are amazing. I must see how many people it takes to join hands around it one day, when I have enough company at Stourhead :)
Thank you very much for viewing large and for your kind comments.

It is such a shame that the people who had the vision to plant such trees were never able to see them mature, they probably thought their way of life would go on forever and future generations of their family would continue to enjoy them, an of course like all the old estates it was done to impress and show their wealth

A good job for us that they did Peter, and things have changed so much that we get the enjoyment of seeing them. Stourhead and the House are N.T. but it is always possible to walk around the park for anyone, with no payment. My friends back garden backs on to this lovely view.

Great use of lead-in lines, Rosa. The curve of the path draws the eye very effectively along the line ot the trees. Cheers, Joe

I really like these old trees. Perhaps the oldest living thing in England?

They must sure have some stories to tell....

Best Wishes, and a good weekend

Hi Peter,

You have reminded me of another very old tree not too far away. It has a date on it, so I will try to visit it shortly and see if it is older than this one.
Many thanks for your kind comments.

Best regards,
Rosa.

Ha ha, you are not alone in that Christiane! It does give a good opportunity to see the skeleton of the trees....but I still prefer them in leaf ;-))

I wish you a lovely weekend also my friend.
