Es liegt auf der Grenze der Kantone Bern und Wallis, im Zentrum der Berner Alpen. Das Finsteraarhorn liegt weit ab von Besiedlung und Verkehrswegen, wird in allen Richtungen von Gletschern und hohen Bergen umgeben und ist daher schwer erreichbar und einsehbar.
