The Titanic finishes its journey - Newhaven 20 8 2023

The Titanic finishes its journey - Newhaven 20 8 2023
As I attended events on the days on either side of the 19th, I didn't have time to get out on WPD. I took lots of photographs of the first four of the rafts taking part in this race, as they neared the finish line and the customary pelting with vegetables, stale bread and flour. The race is approximately seven miles long, along the Sussex Ouse, from Lewes to Newhaven.
I like the look of determination on the face of the man with the paddle. I would guess that he was the oldest of the crew, but wanted to put as much effort into helping the team finish fast as they could. They finished in second place. The fourth placed raft was the most colourful, of those I saw - www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/52077586/in/album/1289376. The other two are in adjoining images.
Photography can paint beautiful pictures, but in many ways capturing the moments and the personalities are more valuable attributes of the medium.

(Thank you for explaining why this wasn't taken on the 19th - so I leave it in the group as an exception.)

A moment in time. I agree that moments and personalities are very valuable parts of the medium of photography. And certainly the determination of the paddle man was needed to steer the Titanic! *smile*

Is this a forgotten Tour de France team trying to catch up?;-)))) And the captain does his best... A great find, Phil.

They will finish within sight of the ferry to Dieppe. So maybe they follow it over to France!

Fantastic. I hope they can swim because like the original Titanic their vessel looks short on lifeboats.

They would be more likely to hit a supermarket trolley than an iceberg on that section of their journey.

My only regret was that I couldn't stay for all eleven rafts to arrive, but even among the first four there were plenty of characters and some colourful costumes. www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/52077586/in/album/1289376

Having said that, I am not very good at photographing people, but when it works well, those are the snaps that give me the most lasting joy.

After 12 years down this way, this was the first year I had got my act together to go and see the race. I misjudged how long they would take to reach Newhaven and had to leave after the first four arrivals. Next time I will arrange a later supper time!
