Gulf Fritillary (f) (Agraulis vanillae)
Been so very few this year. The plants are there... the weather is very very different to normal.
There are just a very few butterflies.. and even now almost no honey bees but now at last some Sweat Bees and Bumbles.
In a normal year I would see these Gulf Fritillaries on a daily basis in reasonable numbers. This year... this is ONLY the 4th I have seen

We had a colder wetter winter too...and it may be the reason for so few. Bumblies I am normally seeing by April... this year... it was mid June before there was anything.. same for butterflies.. and that still is a sparse handful. Last year there were Skippers by the dozen daily....this year.... not even a handful !. Very worryingly... the Honey bees are so very very very few.
Another couple of things.... i have the placid Paper wasps here... they are never a bother.. even the nest on the gable was no worry. This year... i have seen no more of them than the bees. Ants.... again... i have 3 kinds.. the small black.. the small red. and the larger black carpenter ants. This year... only now am i seeing any nests in the grass.. mostly the red ones too.
The birds have faired well... but then i feed them !.. the mammals have had good young... its the insects that have not done well
