Lovely lady you have caught with the camera. Congratulations on Explore

Pam how does one differentiate the female from the male Monarch. (Hope I don't feel like a "duh" by asking this?)
Pam J has replied to Clickity Click
Thankyou Chris !

Certainly NOT daft question !!.

The female has a much more defined double row of dots on the hind wings.. the male also has a black spot on the vein on the hind wing.. the one nearest the body.

But... my "bible" is the Kaufman "Field Guide to Butterflies of North America.

It is BRILLIANT and makes IDing so much easier. !! I live and die on Alibris 2nd hand (and new) book site. I used them well before I came to the US. I got a brand new Kaufman (slight fading on cover) for $11 including postage... I ALWAYS look there for ANY book first. I have had an account for 10 years and never had one complaint to make.

This is the search page on there of the Kaufman.

www.alibris.com/booksearch?browse=0&keyword=Kaufman+Field+Guide+Butterflies+of+North+America&mtype=B&hs.x=28&hs.y=16

There is one there in Very Good condition for $5 + postage !!! There seller grading of condition has never let me down

Beautiful capture, Pam! Oddly enough it was only a couple years ago I learned these migrate and thought how does something so fragile make such a flight. Nature is a marvel.

Pam J has replied to Prairie Rambler
Thankyou Duane.

I know what you mean... and I also feel that any migration is a magical occurrence. So often done without the experience before !

They are so lovely. I can imagine the wait every year for their migration. Amazing how such tiny fragile creatures manage such distances...they have a knowledge we have lost.

I hope they all survive OK, and return in greater numbers. But climate change etc is here, and these tiny creatures suffer.....

Superb shot, btw, and congrats on Explore...

Thankyou Joan !

What amazes me most is that in common with many migrators.. they have never done this before !

I now know how hard it is to shoot these critters, so BRAVO for a great shot. They have been sorely lacking up here for the past couple of years.
Pam J has replied to Jim Boynton
Thankyou Jim !!

Last year I had a roost of 20 for 3-4 days... this year.. this one on the 14th.. and one beautiful Girl today(pics to go up later) BUT.. the migration news it that the sad low numbers that went North did well and the 2nd generation and the 3rd boosted.... we shall see come winter. I submit my sightings to Journey North/South... you might find it of interest.

I think its been a real struggle everywhere this year. I have seen so few butterflies.. and worryingly few bees. Just got to hope the clans will regather .
