A clapper bridge. One of the original bridges on the moors.

A clapper bridge. One of the original bridges on the moors.
This Clapper Bridge can be found at Postbridge, on Dartmoor. Its slabs are over 4 metres (13 ft) long, 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) wide and weigh over 8 metric tons (7.9 long tons; 8.8 short tons) each, making the bridge passable to a small cart. It was first recorded in 1380 and was built to facilitate the transportation of Dartmoor tin by pack horses to the town of Tavistock

Lovely bridge and shot! My guess is that it's considerably older than 1380!

That's what I think too, Andy - it's just that it was recorded at that date, so it must have been there way before that date.

It's quite scary walking across it, especially if someone is trying to cross the bridge but the opposite way!!! Nothing to stop you falling off it neither, because there's no edges.

Ha, ha............no health and safety checks around in those days!

Jenny McIntyre club has replied to Fred Fouarge club

Lovely capture Jenny. I was going to post an image of a different clapper bridge, but I was kidnapped (!) by my best friend and taken to Saltash for a bit of cosseting and took some new views of the two Tamar crossings instead!

My son lives in Plymouth, and often crosses the Tamar bridge. Thanks for the lovely comment and I hope you will soon be fit and well.

Kiitos kommentistasi.

I love these clapper bridges, but am always a bit wary about crossing over them.

Very wise too - you just have to make sure no-one else is coming the opposite way. Also it does help that you don't suffer from vertigo!!!! Thanks for commenting.

Excellent for the theme! A beautiful place and bridge- and in great weather! I was there once- in thick fog when everything was wet and slippery....

It can't have been easy at that time with not having cranes and hydraulics - I wonder how many people it took to lift those slabs.
