Laden.

Laden.
Up early but not bright eyed and bushy tailed so nothing much done until I got out and pruned back my kiwi fruit climber to create a space for my blue tit nest box. Found a selection of screw nails and cleared up some of the undergrowth so Andy would have a clear path to where the nest box was to be. He came over when I phoned and the box was up in no time. Frittered away some time having coffee then went out and tinkered yet again with the bird ground feeder. I think I've got it sorted out now although if nearby plants grow a lot I may have to rethink. The crocuses were alive with bees so a lot of time was spent photographing and I saw a blue tit giving the new box a once over. . Later in the day Linda phoned which was nice. Much of the conversation was gloomy though what with lockdown continuing, roads full of potholes, the problems of Brexit and the Salmond/Sturgeon affair. We didn't seem to be able to find anything cheerful to talk about except the weather. I'm keen to get on with the garden but am not walking as my knee and hip are not happy. It's hard to strike a balance. I think I need a day off where I take myself somewhere different for a change.

If it helps Jean the nesting box should face North East with a clear un-obstructed flight path to the entrance. I know this because I just looked it up and that explains why my nesting box facing in the right direction has had a breeding pair of tits every year for the past four years whilst the other box on the other side of the garden has remained empty.
Your bee gorging in the Crocus couldn't care less which direction it comes from.

The box is already up I'm afraid and there is no possibility of moving it to face North East anyway so I'll just have to cross my fingers. Birds have built nests on the side of the garden where it is so who knows.

Wow your Bees are doing well got full saddle bags, Excellent shot Jean, not seen one Bee on a flower here yet !!!!
I found Happy Snapper post interesting regarding the Blue Tit Bird Box. I also have had Blue Tits nesting in my garden for the last 5years & at the moment they are taking a great interest again.
But my Box faces West / South quite up high, with a Conifer shielding behind.
Good luck takes them a while to get used to a new Box & Bird table .

Thanks for the information. My box is facing the same way as yours and is about two metres high at the top of a fence post for a trellis fence. There are climbing plants growing around it but it has an unobstructed flight path. I'm not that hopeful but there are a lot of blue tits around so we'll see. I'm lucky with the bees. There are hives in Falkland Palace gardens which are not that far away and once my crocuses flower they visit every year. It's great to have them back and I'm now waiting for the first bumble bee. They are usually a little later.

Ooh, this is really wonderful Jean. The detail inside the Crocus is exquisite and the sharpness and detail of the bee is truly amazing! It looks like it's finding plenty of pollen.

A magical capture Jean..........I wish I could give you more than one star!

Thank you Keith. Crocuses appear to have a lot of pollen.. The bees get covered in it then settle somewhere and scape it off their head and body and stow it into their leg sacs if they have room. I've never managed to photograph them doing it but live in hope.
