Superb light and colour Roger, a wonderful tree in it's time, I wonder what happened here. I could imagine the root system of this tree is the same as the upper branches.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to HappySnapper
The root are an interesting thought Maurice many thanks.
Found this in answer to what happened,
Cedar can be affected by Sirococcus blight of cedar. It’s a serious disease caused by the fungus Sirococcus tsugae. It was first found in England in 2013 and has since been confirmed in Wales and Scotland.

Definitely a conifer and the shape makes me think of a Lebanon Cedar. They are stately trees and, even dead, it makes for a wonderful sculpture that you caught in beautiful light, Roger.

belated HFF!
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Annalia S.
Thank you for the wonderful comments Annalia, I do need to brush up on my tree identification, a task for the list.
Annalia S. has replied to Roger (Grisly) club
I am by no means an expert but I have two Lebanon cedars in my garden and the habit, bark and shape is very similar to the tree in your picture. We also had a Deodara (Himalayan) cedar that got uprooted a few years ago by a freak weather phenomenon called downdraft (along with nearly all the trees in parks and gardens in our area). I suppose yours could also be a Deodara, it's hard to tell without the leaves, but the bark in my Deodara was darker and the dead wood took on a reddish tinge with age, which I don't see in the trunk of your tree that has been stripped of the bark.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Annalia S.
Thank you Annalia, based on the comments and opinions of others and limited research by me I am fairly sure you are correct by naming it as a Lebanon Ceder, It's demise possibly caused by the Sirococcus blight of cedar.
The downdraught phenomenon must have caused some concerne at the time!
Annalia S. has replied to Roger (Grisly) club
Scared the spit out of me and caused extensive damages, though fortunately no victims. An elderly neighbour told me the wind gust that went through her apartment was so strong she wedged herself between the fridge and the cooking stove to keep from getting blown away. It also came with hail and most of the window blinds in the neighborhood looked like somebody had been shooting at them with a machine gun.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Annalia S.
Wow, a miracle everyone escaped alive but what a shock to the system that must have been, thankfully we rarely experience the extremes of weather.
