Fantastic image Roger, I love the vastness and the headland almost lost in the mist. A certain fav for me on this.

Very generous Maurice, the beach is seven miles long and the tide can recede for one & half miles with much of it soft sinking mud hence the need for hovercraft as rescue vehicles,

I like hovercraft and was sad to see them go from Channel crossings (I still haven't gone on the Chunnel). Pleased to see they still have their uses!

Many thanks Andy, many of the rescues along this stretch of coast would not be possible without hovercraft.

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Thank you Rosa, Stretchers travel separately on a 6 wheeled off road truck and they came back mud free so I have to assume they were not required and that all was well.

An interesting and well composed image, Roger. I guess the hovercraft would be about the only thing usable across the mudflats.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to tiabunna club
Many thanks George, because of the extent of the flats and speed of the incoming tides nothing else could be used, the hovercraft saved the lives of 50 people in it's first year in service although I am unable to find up to date figures

MARVELOUS!!! The picture by itself is very interesting but the information you give really adds so much more. Thanks too for the link. It's thought-provoking to wonder what the story was...

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Janet Brien club
Having lived and worked close by for most of my life I am well aware of the dangers this coast can throw at you, but it is only an hour from a large city and these are the people that can be caught out by the tides. appreciate your interest and comments Janet, Thank you.

Janet Brien club has replied to Roger (Grisly) club
Hey, thanks for the reply! I'm glad I spotted it, I don't usually go back to pictures I've commented on so I will also say that if you've left a reply and I don't say anything about it, I didn't see it. You can always let me know when you drop a comment on my latest pictures, that way I'll know to come back to read it! :)

Yeah, it's surprising how silly people can be about things that need to be paid careful attention to. Mother Nature does not kid, and when it comes to the ocean, it's no joke. Where I grew up, in San Francisco, the undertow is deadly. People don't understand the danger until its too late: www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-teens-presumed-dead-san-francisco-ocean-beach-20160417-story.html

This is a terrific shot Roger. The light is really wonderful and I really like the misty, cloud laden sky. On the sands and mudflats there are some beautiful layers of colour, shapes and detail. In particular I like the Hovercraft which is perfectly positioned to balance out the lighthouse. The tiny people on the sands are a bonus.

An interesting narrative and link too...............the rescue service does a magnificent job! Thanks for sharing.

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Keith Burton club
For those wonderful comments Keith I thank you. I find the place much more interesting and photogenic without the water it's then everything changes after every tide and that throws up endless possibilities.
