Woolly bear caterpillar (Explored)

Woolly bear caterpillar (Explored)
The Sunday Challenge: Wildife

This woolly bear caterpillar is looking for a sheltered place to spend the winter. As cold weather approaches, its metabolism will slow down and then it will dehydrate to protect itself from the freezing temperatures. Its circulatory system will produces a cryoprotectant (glycerol) which will causes its tissues to freeze solid during the winter.

Anni, Gabi Lombardo, Karl Hartwig Schütz, Rob and 18 other people have particularly liked this photo

Great colours, Esther. If I move the mouse up and down the screen the caterpillar seems to move too.

Just imagine if we humans could do the same.
What could we save on heating energy alone in winter? ;)
Nature is always just fascinating.
