Poland - Bus to Krakow (#2260)

Poland - Bus to Krakow (#2260)
Though we always hear comments about McDonald's as a U.S. store spread across the globe, it seemed there were more Subways across the parts of Germany and Poland that I explored.

Subway in my part of the U.S. tends to be an entry point for entrepreneurial immigrants. Something about them makes them appealing to newly arrive small business people from India or Latin America. I wonder if whatever makes Subway appealing for those groups makes it easier for the franchise to spread into unexpected foreign markets.

From their ads it looked like their food was pretty much the same as in the U.S. (where I eat in them often), but I'm guilty of not trying one in Europe -- though I did eat at McDonald's multiple times when I had a craving for plain old American food or something quick.

There's plenty of other, non-American, fast food in the areas I explored, quite a bit of it being non-chain small businesses from non-European heritage (Turkish and Middle-Eastern in particular) folk. So, it might be that the unexpected obverse is going on -- that in the U.S. its more difficult to be a sole proprietor and thus non-native folk have to turn to Subway and similar chains for entry into capital. Would be an interesting research question.
