That's a pretty Oldsmobile. My grandfather was a big Buick guy, and my parents always bought Fords, but the '57 Oldsmobile is a nice looking car.

Fords! In the 50's in Jacksonville, GM was considered the brand to own, Ford was considered to be a 'country folk' car. Olds was considered to be just one step short of Cadillac. Of course we always had cars that few others owned (Rambler, Kaiser, and even a Simca). I liked the look of the Olds, but the seats in GM cars were problems for short people -- to reach the gas and clutch, you had to sit too close to the wheel.

My grandfather always had a Jacksonville attitude toward Fords, which I think is why my parents bought them. It was an act of rebellion by my mom. When I got old enough, I rejected the Baptist faith but bought into the Fords. Hence, "BlueFairlane," after a 1963 model that was my second car. I've never driven an old GM product, so I don't know how they compare. My dad had a Rambler as a work car when I was very young, but he hated it.

Souped up mid-50's Fords (and Mercuries) were the emblems of rebellious youth when I was a teen - the interesting guys drove them. My work cars were hand-me-downs in high school (mid-60's) -- had a 49 Chevy coupe (terrible, could barely see out of it and over-heated easily) that one brother gave me, and then another brother's girlfriend gave me her blue and white 1954 Studebaker Ambulette (easy to drive except the slipping transmission and bad shocks).
