An abandoned school in an unnamed area in Box Butte County, Neb., at the intersection of NE-2 and NE-71. I found the abandoned schools, in areas that are largely devoid of humans, to be rather sad reminders of how much human activity once existed, and has now disappeared, from these areas.

Decayed, yet beautiful.

Using the bus was part of it, but the rural west is also just losing population as farming becomes more and more mechanized and needs less and less workers.

Oops, I knew I was going to make that 'urban' slip and use 'farm' when I was including ranching, which has also become much more mechanized.

I was thinking more along the line of the increased concentration of ranching into huge feed lots. Individual ranches may still remain somewhat labor intensive, but ranching as an industry has become more concentrated thus removing the family rancher from business.

I suspected that was a tease.... (about the mechanical bull). Re the factory ranches, the main point is that they drive out of business family ranches.

Shh... we're not supposed to mention Monsanto or Arthur-Daniels-Midland, their lawyers will track us down...

The Central Valley in California has many of the factory ranches (and poultry factories), its frightening what they're doing to the environment and what happens to the workers. As I see more and more of those, I've been replacing more of my meat protein with vegetable or grain-based protein. I still enjoy a hamburger or piece of chicken, but eating them much less often.
