I'm always somewhat surprised by the quality of the architecture (including the interesting fonts) of historic buildings in small rural towns such as Scottsbluff, Ne.

I kept running into surprising reminders all over the Plains states of the ethnic diversity of the settlement of the area in the late 1800's. Per Wikipedia, there was a solid 'Greek town' in Omaha in the early 1900's but ethnic hatred later drove them away.

Being from the South and the 50's/60's, I was used to white hostility towards blacks, but had never heard of the ethnic hostilities until I was in the military. It was quite an eye opener to see the level of nastiness of northern European ancestry towards east and southern European ancestry, since we didn't see that in the South. Pardon the preachiness here, but maintaining political and economic power is helped by keeping 'the people' fighting each other, particularly when things are not going well (e.g., a recession) and there's a need to find a scapegoat (e.g., immigrants).

Your experiences are what many of us who share an openness experience. I never understood the racism in my hometown, probably because my family is of Hispanic origin on one side and thus didn't quite fit in with Jax of the 50's. But, because of defending blacks, I received regular hostility from many in my high school (and later). Unfortunately, most of the blacks that I encountered as a youth didn't have any reason to trust whites due to their own experiences, so there was no support from that side. Socially, then, being accepting was a lose-lose situation. Luckily my parents were very good at instilling a sense that doing right was more important that being popular.
