HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL GEM. Queen Berengère de Navarre, widow of Richard Lionheart, decides to found an abbey for the Cistercian order. In 1229, she launches the construction and dies a year later. The construction of the abbey lasts until 1365.
It has known many upheavals throughout its history, such as the 100 Years War where it was partially burnt; after the French Revolution it was transformed into a barn, linen laundry, farm, truck garage (by the Germans during WW II ), an apprenticeship and vacation center, until the Department of Sarthe buys it in 1959 to completely renovate it. It is classified as a Historic Monument in 1973.
Today Epau-Abbey can be visited (museum, exhibitions, concerts) and is also the place of the assembly of the Departmental Council.
