For Those In Peril On The Sea

For Those In Peril On The Sea
Fog Horn at Ardnamurchan Lighthouse on Ardnamurchan Point, the most westerly point in mainland Britain. In the distance can be seen the Small Islands of the Inner Hebrides The lighthouse itself was designed by Alan Stevenson, the uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson. It was manned by two lighthouse keepers, who supplemented their income and food supply by keeping cows and sheep on the surrounding land

Thank you. It is no longer in use but it must have sounded quite eerie coming through the fog

So it is. I hadn't noticed. No service here then either!

Eye catching and I expect ear splitting when in action. Is this now someone's des res ? So many old lighthouses are and it's good that they are preserved.

Hello Jean. Loud yes but it must have saved lives when it was in use. The lighthouse is run as a museum, but I believe the accommodation can be rented as a holiday let.
Have a good day and thank you.

Your comments really put a smile on my face this morning. Thank you. Great sound system and no neighbours - perfect. I don't know what it would be like there in winter, - it can be pretty blustery in summer

Did they also expect the color to pierce through the fog? Thanks for the history of the place.

Good afternoon Esther and many thanks for your kind comments. I am not sure if the colour is a 'red for danger' thing. Have a good evening

Fascinating shot and info here, Carol. Lovely glimpse of the Inner Hebrides across the water.

Thank you very much Dave. I believe the building under the fog horn is an all weather observation post. Minke whales and dolphins can be seen from this point.
Have a lovely weekend

An eye-catching presentation, with good helpful notes.
Naturally the colour of the horn had to be loud as well ;-)

Guess they had to be able to find it in the fog!! Lol! Many thanks for the visit and the lovely comments. Have a great weekend

Like it! Thanks. Does it still work?

Good afternoon Andrew. No, I am afraid it is no longer in use. I believe the building beneath is used as a viewpoint for spotting Minke whales and dolphins

Many thanks Helena. You have great views from here. It is quite exposed though so can be a bit cold and windy.
