It looks so inviting Doug. Lots of the lovely wooden signs around the country. They make a good photo on their own. I often find that the walk is longer than indicated on them. I don't know who measures their miles ;-))

This my be a rerouted path Roger. There is another route which is not a public, way but which is a more natural route to take down the dale to the eventual end at the village of Sawdon about 3.5 km away. The two routes merge about halfway.

No need for such excessive effort Marta. You can either unlatch the gate, or use the stile (hidden by tree branches) on the right of the gate to get on the path;-))

So if I understand correctly, you were standing on the private section of the footpath. HFF Doug.

Thanks very much Christa. The area on this side of the gate is in fact a country road and is public. The track on the other side of the gate is the public footpath. All other land on the other side of the gate, the field to the right for example, is private. The public are only allowed to use the public footpath, they are not allowed to enter the field. Hope this explains everything.

Beautifully captured Doug. It looks like an attractive place to walk, protected from direct sunlight by the overhanging trees. I love the contrast betwwen light and shade and the lush greens. Super composition. Love it.

These paths are known here as cattle trails. They are very old and the right of the pedestrian prevails over the gates and fences where there is always an access to the effect. Your image is wonderful , Doug.

Thanks for your visit, kind comment, and interesting information Anton. Here in the British Isles we have something similar called Drovers' roads. They also are very old dating back to at least medieval times. They were used to move cattle and other livestock between fields or to market many kilometres away. For example from the west coast of Scotland to markets in southern Scotland near Glasgow. Some of the routes they followed were later to become the route of modern roads. Others are now the route of public paths or public bridleways, much used by hikers in the hills and mountains of these islands.
