Ein Tintenfisch im Wald? An octopus in the forest?

Yes, you could almost say it: tentacles like an octopus, plus the exotic color. But a squid on the forest floor with a repulsive, ghastly carrion smell? On closer inspection you can see, that this structure is a fungus, namely the octopus stinkhorn (Clathrus archeri, Syn.: Anthurus archeri), which is related to the common stinkhorn. Like many other mushrooms, it grows unnoticed in the underground with its mycelium and lives on dead organic material in order to form its conspicuous fruiting bodies above ground under certain weather conditions (warm, humid) for reproduction. The smell of carrion attracts all sorts of flying insects that spread the spores of the fungus. More in the Wikipedia article. The octopus stinkhorn was brought from Australia at the beginning of the last century.
The mushroom in the picture grew in a mixed oak forest.
