Sommerbeginn - Start of summer

Almost in time for the calendar start of summer (21.06.), the typical butterfly for this time of year, namely the marbled white (Melanargia galathea), also appears in larger numbers. In Germany, this butterfly was the Butterfly of the Year 2019.
After mating, the females drop the eggs onto the ground in an undirected manner, and the caterpillars that hatch from them feed on various grasses. Since many other butterfly caterpillars need grasses as food, natural meadows are of enormous importance for the preservation of our butterfly world.
In the photo, a marbled white is sitting on a brown knapweed (Centaurea jacea) sucking nectar.
