Jetzt blühen sie wieder, die Schneeglöckchen (Galanthus), in den Vorgärten und verwildert in manchen Wäldern. Erstaunlich sind die vielen Trivialnamen dieses Frühblühers: Frühlingsglöckchen, Hübsches Februar-Mädchen, Lichtmess-Glöckchen, Lichtmess-Glocken, Märzglöckchen, Märzveilchen, Marienkerzen, Milchblume, Schnee-Durchstecher, Schneetulpe, Weiße Jungfrau, Weißglatze. Etwa 20 Arten umfasst die Gattung Galanthus, in Mitteleuropa ist nur das Kleine Schneeglöckchen (Galanthus nivalis) heimisch. Achtung: Alle Pflanzenteile sind giftig! Interessant ist, dass ein Inhaltsstoff, nämlich das Alkaloid Galantamin, bei der Behandlung von Demenz (Alzheimer) eingesetzt wird. Galantamin wird mittlerweile auch technisch synthetisiert.
