Ein gigantischer Pilz - A gigantic mushroom

During a walk through the Ringpark in Würzburg, I came across this huge mushroom at the base of the trunk of an old beech tree. It was about 1.5 m wide and about 40 cm high! I had never seen anything like it before. My research revealed that it was the giant polypore (Meripilus giganteus). This fungus first attacks deep-lying roots in the root zone of various deciduous trees and then penetrates into root zones close to the trunk. There it causes a supply disturbance in the wood part (xylem), which finally results in a severe reduction in the vitality of the tree. Reduction in leaf size, death of the tree crown and trunk are further characteristics of fungal infestation. Infested old beech trees can collapse abruptly due to the loss of stability of the trunk with a fully greened tree crown. The urban foresters will (have to) fell this old beech immediately. What a pity.
