Die Wiese lebt (6) - The meadow is living (6) - mit PiP
Zur Zeit kann man auf Wiesen besonders viele Männchen und Weibchen vom Schachbrettfalter (Melanargia galathea) beobachten. Im Bild ein Männchen des Schachbrettfalters (Melanargia galathea), das einer Blüte einer Wiesen-Flockenblume (Centaurea jacea) Nektar saugt. Die weiblichen Falter lassen sich relativ gut von den männlichen unterscheiden, sie sind nämlich auf der Unterseite leicht gelb gefärbt (siehe PiP).
Die Weibchen lassen nach der Begattung ihre Eier auf Grashalmen oder anderen Pflanzen sitzend ungezielt auf den Boden fallen. Die Eier sind deutlich größer als die verwandter Arten, da die jungen Raupen mehr Energie benötigen, um nach dem Schlupf ohne Nahrungsaufnahme zu überwintern. Die Raupen sind nach der Winterruhe nachtaktiv und fressen an verschiedenen Gräsern, um nach der Verpuppung im Mai als Schmetterlinge im Frühsommer wieder die Wiesen zu bevölkern. Da die Entwicklung dieser Schmetterlingsart relativ unspezialisiert ist, erklärt sich so das ziemlich häufige Vorkommen.

At the moment, many males and females of the marbled white (Melanargia galathea) can be observed in meadows. The picture shows a male of the marbled white (Melanargia galathea) sucking nectar on a flower of the brown knapweed (Centaurea jacea). The female butterflies can be distinguished relatively well from the males, namely they are slightly yellow colored on the underside (see PiP).
After mating, the females drop their eggs onto the ground sitting on the blades of grass or other plants in an undirected manner. The eggs are significantly larger than those of related species, as the young caterpillars require more energy to overwinter without feeding after hatching. The caterpillars are nocturnal after hibernation and feed on various grasses, returning to populate meadows as butterflies in early summer after pupation in May. Since the development of this butterfly species is relatively unspecialized, this explains the fairly frequent occurrence.
