Die Wiese lebt (6) - The meadow is living (6) - mit PiP

At the moment, many males and females of the marbled white (Melanargia galathea) can be observed in meadows. The picture shows a male of the marbled white (Melanargia galathea) sucking nectar on a flower of the brown knapweed (Centaurea jacea). The female butterflies can be distinguished relatively well from the males, namely they are slightly yellow colored on the underside (see PiP).
After mating, the females drop their eggs onto the ground sitting on the blades of grass or other plants in an undirected manner. The eggs are significantly larger than those of related species, as the young caterpillars require more energy to overwinter without feeding after hatching. The caterpillars are nocturnal after hibernation and feed on various grasses, returning to populate meadows as butterflies in early summer after pupation in May. Since the development of this butterfly species is relatively unspecialized, this explains the fairly frequent occurrence.
