Vom Aussterben bedroht - Threatened by extinction - 2 PiPs

The chequered blue (Scolitantides orion) is a very small blue that currently flies in abandoned vineyards with drystone walls. The underside of the butterfly is unusual for a blue, its upper side is typical of blue butterflies (see PiP 1). Females lay eggs on plants of the genus Hylotelephium, especially on Hylotelephium telephium. In PiP 2 three laid eggs can be seen. The caterpillars also feed on Hylotelephium. The Butterflies are found in Germany in Thuringia, Saxony, Bavaria and in Rhineland-Palatinate. They are on the Red List Germany and are threatened with extinction.
The photo was taken in an abandoned Franconian vineyard in a nature reserve. The male in the photo butterfly sucks on a flower of Cerastium arvense.
