Two-tone Swiss Stone Pine

Two-tone Swiss Stone Pine
Saturday Self-challenge: tree

This tree is showing the stress of a bad summer season or a very cold winter a few years ago. We have learned that it may take a few years for the damage to show. We have been living here for just a year now and our beautiful Swiss Stone Pine is half dead. Nevertheless, it makes a compelling subject for this week's challenge.

Wierd Folkersma, Ulrich G, Valfal, Annemarie and 11 other people have particularly liked this photo

What a shame. Still, the photo is quite fetching in the beautiful light.

It's a beautiful color although it's not a good sign. The one behind it looks to be okay.

That one is a well established Ponderosa Pine.

une prise et un constat intéressant
C'est la partie qui dépasse de la palissade qui est morte , la partie abritée est bien verte : coup de blizzard ?

Oh, the color is sooooo pretty!!! But I am feeling sad...it is such a terrible thing when a tree dies. One of our huge Ponderosa pines was killed last year by pine beetles, in about 4 weeks it went from healthy to dead. Such a tragedy :(

Like the light and the colors. But I agree with Janet: it's always a tragedy when a tree dies.

Lovely light and colours.
Would it help by watering the tree during the summer?

We think the previous owner neglected to keep up on the watering, even though there is an automatic watering system installed. There is another dead tree of a different species that died next to this one.

Further research has shown that this is a Swiss Pine. It does well with less water. The problem could be from too much water. It seems to collect in this part of the yard.

It's beautiful in its death throes. Maybe it's pining for Scotland.

My wife found a label on the tree while she was cleaning the yard. It is actually a Swiss Stone Pine. I had never heard of that variety before,

So sad to hear about the pine, but what a great tribute to it in picture.
