West Wemyss

West Wemyss
Another lovely weekend here. Rabbit and I went away in the van to Dysart, on the Fife coast, and had a long but interesting walk along the coastal path to West Wemyss, East Wemyss and the East Wemyss ancient caves.

This row of houses in West Wemyss caught my eye. You can see from the recycling bins etc that they're not preserved in aspic but are real homes - but they've retained the traditional east of Scotland style and colours.

It's hard to imagine, particularly on a summer's day with flowers blooming all along the shore, that this quiet area of Fife was once full of industry - coal mines, salt pans, ship building, gas works.

(oh, and for anyone who's wondering how to pronounce it - it's 'weems'!)

I lived there for eighteen years. It's come up in the world quite a bit since I left. When I arrived It was known as the village that time forgot and I bought a flat for £1,500.00. Cheaper than my first car. I always thought it had great potential and loved living there.

PS. Did your flat look right out to sea?

Yes, it was up at the far end of Church Street and was on the top floor. Most of the windows looked over the roofs of the houses below straight across the Forth. The majority of houses in the village were owned by the Wemyss family and I think still are. A lot of the people were ex -mining community. I was told I would always be an incomer but found them very friendly.

Oh wow, I didn't know you'd lived there! I was really struck by it yesterday - there were barbecues and children playing and a nice friendly buzz about the place. I went into the pub which is run by the community development trust and was made to feel very welcome. It's great to see that so much care has been put into preserving the character of the houses - with real people living in them at the same time - and into the coastal path, the harbour and the green spaces.

Strange that West and East Wemyss are located on the east coast and Wemyss Bay is on the west coast. We are easily confused.

A very nice shot and I think this is where there was once a pottery producing wares covered in roses !!!

Yes, I'm not sure that the pottery was actually in West Wemyss, but it was named after the Wemyss family and estate, which, as Jean says above, owns many of the buildings around here.

I only know how to pronounce it because of a classmate with that surname.
