A far more optimist Protestant, eschatological scenario was portrayed in a broadsheet issued around 1615 in connection with the prolonged succession conflict over the strategically important duchies of Julih-Cleves close to the border between Germany, France and United Provinces. The Dutch engraving entitled ‘The Display and Explanation of St. George of Cleves refers specifically to the Spanish and Dutch involvement in this crisis and the confrontation between Maurice of Nassau and Ambrosio Spinola in 1615 (Plate 2.7) It demonstrates how the Dutch, fighting under the banner of Reformed Protestantism, appropriated the iconography of St George and the dragon for propaganda purposes. This motif had, of course, already been used to considerable effect by German Protestants since the middle of the sixteenth century. . . . . Page 64
