Il Castel Gavone (o Govone) fu eretto nel XII secolo dai Del Carretto nel loro marchesato a Finale Ligure, che ne era la capitale, sopra il colle del Becchignolo, lo sperone roccioso che domina Finalborgo.
Il suo soprannome è dovuto alla "Torre dei Diamanti" (circa 1490), una torre a forma di carena di nave e coperta da uno splendido bugnato; ha una lunga e tormentata soria, più volte distrutto dai genovesi, da integro era uno dei più belli castelli d'Italia.
