Blaenavon Monmouth Wales 15th September 2023

Blaenavon Monmouth Wales 15th September 2023
Now all the deep coal mines in the UK are closed the only way to go underground today is in a museum like The Big Pit National Museum at Blaenavon.

The Big Pit used to be connected to the LNWR line to Pontypool by a steeply graded mineral line. Today Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST (Works No 544 1900) NCB No 10 stands on the truncated remains by the pit head coupled to a rail-mounted crane.

Hi Pete
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
Wonderful and interesting composition
Great colours too.
I do have a fondness for this mine, having been there a few times (but not in digital photography age). Shame that cameras fall into the 'contraband' category!
Best Wishes, a nice week ahead, and stay safe!!

Thanks Peter.
This was my first visit which I enjoyed very much coming from a South Yorkshire mining family. Agree about the contraband restriction!
Enjoy your week
Cheers

A nice capture of industrial history, I don't know if Snibston have underground tours I know they have open days

Thanks Peter. I've not been to Snibston for some years but they didn't do underground then. The National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield did them back in the 1990s. I think it all depends on the water levels.Pumping it out is an expensive business. The Big Pit has natural drainage so is dry underground.

What a fabulous historical industrial image, Pete. It certainly paints a picture of the days of the deep pits in Wales. Thanks. D
