Rhyd Ddu North Wales 11th September 2010

Rhyd Ddu North Wales 11th September 2010
Amid the spectacular scenery of Snowdonia, Beyer-Garratt NGG16 2-6-2 + 2-6-2T 138 (1958), formerly of the South African Alfred County Railway, climbs the steep gradient south of Rhyd Ddu with the return train to Caernafon.

This was my first trip on the railway and was definitely worth the visit. At this time the line terminated at Pont Croesor in the middle of nowhere a few miles north of Portmadog, a 45mile round trip, but today it runs the full length of the line to Portmadog.

Lovely, this is/was a very familiar view for me ...

Hope you enjoyed the "fireworks" climbing the curves near Beddgelert. That's not an easy section, even with a big loco like the Garratts.

Is the original Tasmanian garratt at Welsh Highland Railway? I haven't found any list of rolling stock for WHR.

If I might interpose a remark ?

K1 has been spending sometime at Statfold Barn, who kindly did some necessary work on her.
Sadly, she's a bit on the small size to work normal service trains on the WHR and she is physically too big for the FfRly.

for more information, see [& links] I thin it is fairly up to date ...

Yes it is Graham. We passed it at Waunfawr station on this trip. I'm not sure if it's still operational 12 years later though.

Thanks L_G and SR2013 for the info. Good to see K1 is working. I'd never heard of www.statfold.com/railway till now.
