Monument
The Sunday Challenge: Ikonisch

The Sunday Challenge: Iconic

The column of the National Monument on the Dam in Amsterdam, the best known part. It is a monument to commemorate all war victims from and after the Second World War in the Netherlands and abroad. It has been there since 1956, and every year the official commemoration of the dead takes place here in the presence of the King, the government and the armed forces. Other citizens can also attend this ceremony, as the Dam is then full. The commemoration is broadcast live on internet and TV.

The four handcuffed men represent the misery of war. The dogs to the left and right of the column represent grief and loyalty, behind these dogs but invisible in the photo are two figures that symbolise the resistance. The female figure with the child and the doves symbolise victory, peace and new life.

The monument stands on one side of the Dam Square, on the other side is the Royal Palace. The Dam itself is, of course, the place where the dam was laid in the Amstel and Amsterdam came into being. The Dam itself serves as a place for fairs, demonstrations and manifestations.

What an amazing POV. Wonderful idea and execution.
You took me back a long time to Amsterdam. Many years ago we were planning a holiday to France but my husband had to attend a conference in Amsterdam so we organised that I would drive to Amsterdam from the UK and meet him there and we would go on holiday. I was clearly courageous! I had no idea what a journey it would be. No satnav. I took the ferry and made my way, I completely lost the signs or didn’t know what to look for . I stopped many times to ask directions to Amsterdam and then Dam Square and clearly it was difficult, I could see from the expressions. I finally made It and asked a drinks delivery driver who kindly said follow my van. He seemed to take me over pavements.....I was more than a little worried. I’d asked him for the hotel I needed where the conference was. Krasnapolsky In Dam square. He stopped and pointed and I found where I needed to be. I really needed a lie down after my ordeal.
I’ll never forget that journey and that was a beautiful hotel. We stayed for a few days to look at the sights and then moved on. I don’t recall this monument but that’s a shame as it looks beautiful.

Marvelous presentation and of course that it commemorates all war victims from and after the Second World War is commendable as we should never forget ot take those who lost their lives for granted. Thanks for sharing this monument and it's history!
